US Ambassador to Israel Says Trump Hasn’t Decided to Strike Iran
“I would say that the decision still needs to be made,” the ambassador told Israeli television in comments aired Saturday.
He said Trump remains committed to seeking a peaceful resolution with Tehran.
“President Trump is always hopeful for the best outcome. He is, in fact, let’s never forget, ‘the art of the deal.’ And if he can get that, then that’s ideal,” the ambassador said, framing diplomacy as the preferred approach.
He also suggested that Trump would not hesitate to act if diplomacy fails, referencing past military actions taken during his administration.
“But if he can’t, he’s not afraid to do what he proved he would do last summer when he instigated Midnight Hammer.”
The ambassador described Trump as a leader who fulfills his commitments and does not make hollow threats.
“This is a president who has made many promises; you’ll be hard pressed to find one that he hasn’t kept,” he said. “He doesn’t make empty threats.”
He addressed Iranians directly, urging them to pay careful attention to the president’s words.
“What I would say to (the people of Iran) is, note carefully what the president says, take him at his word. He will keep his promise.”
When asked about earlier reports that a strike might have been imminent in mid January and why it was called off, he said a planned action “could have been close,” but suggested it was wise to carefully weigh the consequences.
He said he does not know when a potential US strike against Iran might occur, nor whether Iran might choose to act against Israel first, and added that no deadline had been mentioned.
He encouraged Israelis to continue with their daily lives and be prepared to respond if alarms sounded.
