Israel Summons Ukrainian Ambassador
The episode stemmed from an interview the ambassador granted to a daily newspaper, where he disapproved of Netanyahu’s assertions regarding his communications with Putin.
As reported by the newspaper, Yuval Fuchs, the deputy director-general for Eurasian Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informed the ambassador that “his comments were entirely unacceptable and deviated from diplomatic protocol.”
Fuchs additionally emphasized that “the ambassador’s remarks ignore Israel’s clear position since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine – a position demonstrated, among other things, by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar’s visit to Kyiv this year and Israel’s votes at the United Nations.”
In a statement cited by the channel, the Foreign Ministry noted that Fuchs voiced his expectation that the envoy’s future statements would correspond with the mutual aspiration of both nations to further reinforce their cooperation.
Earlier in the week, Netanyahu addressed the Knesset, highlighting his “personal relationship” with Putin and noting that he speaks with him “on a regular basis” to advance Israel’s “vital interests,” particularly the protection of its northern frontier.
The following day, the Ukrainian ambassador replied to Netanyahu’s remarks, stating that he “was surprised by Netanyahu’s remarks, especially considering what Israel endured on Oct. 7. One must stand on the right, moral side of history.”
